Private Voice Training for Yoga Teachers

As yoga teachers we are always using our voices. Whether it's guiding your class, leading a mantra, kirtan or ohming. Being able to use your voice dynamically and articulately is necessary to energetically hold and command the class. Yet as teachers we never think about the importance of our voice.

Just like any other part of your body, your voice can tire, become tight, and end in limited mobility/range. This is especially true if we are teaching over music or teaching a bunch of classes in a row. But, like the rest of your body, it too can be exercised to achieve greater range, strength, and flexibility.

I'm sure you've had the experience of taking a class with a teacher whose voice was a monotone. Even if the class is a gentle restorative or slow vinyasa, the class should have peaks and valleys and your voice should help carry the narrative of those valleys and peaks.

Over the years as a yoga studio owner, I have heard too often from students, "I know they are an awesome teacher, but his/her voice just grates on me, or distracts me from the practice, can you recommend someone else?" It's a shame to hear that the student's experience was so affected by the sound of a teacher's voice since it doesn't have to be that way.

And that's where I step in. Whether your goal is to sing kirtan or hold the space, your voice is the main interpreter of your intention and energy as a teacher.
